When we hear the word ‘policy’, it can be easy to tune out. After all, policies can seem complicated, boring, and far removed from our everyday lives. Besides, isn’t it the ‘playground’ for only the politicians, civil service, lawyers and ‘smart ones’? So, why bother?
That’s not entirely correct!
Understanding policy is essential if we want to have a say in how our ‘world’ operates. Why? That’s because policies play a crucial role in shaping our society as well as our well-being.
How does it impact me?
First, let’s understand what policy is. Simplistically, policy refers to a set of guidelines, rules or regulations that are developed to guide decisions and actions in a particular area. Policies can be developed by governments, businesses, organizations or even groups of individuals. They can cover a wide range of topics from environmental regulations to workplace safety standards to education policies and even futsal rules.
As such:
1. Policies can have a significant impact on our lives, often in ways that we don’t realize.
For example, policies related to healthcare can determine whether or not you have access to affordable and quality medical care. Policy decisions about the environment can impact the air we breathe and the water we drink. Policies related to education can affect the opportunities available to us, while policies related to the economy can impact our job prospects and our ability to support ourselves as well as our families.
2. Policies help to create and promote a safer, fairer and more equitable society
For example, policies related to education normally ensure that all students have equal access to quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Policies decisions about pollution, conservation and sustainability help protect our planet and natural resources for future generation. Policies related to civil rights and anti-discrimination help ensure that everyone is treated fairly and has equal access to opportunities whereas policies related to things like food safety and workplace safety help protect the public from harm.
Still not convinced? Let us take a look at these well-known policies that have a profound impact on our lives and society as a whole.
- The Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed into law in 2010. This policy expanded the access to healthcare for millions of Americans who were previously uninsured.
- The Paris Agreement that was signed in 2015, committing countries globally to
work together to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
How can I get involved?
Now that we understand why policy matters, I’m sure the next question that many will have is – ‘What can I do about it?’ or ‘I’m too small a fry to make a difference’ or even ‘Who will listen to me? I’m a nobody.’
Again, that’s not true!
It is essential that you have a say in the policy-making process. Getting involved in policy discussions can seem intimidating to many, but there are many ways to start. Here are a few ways that you can get involved:
1. Stay informed
Read up on current policy issues and proposals that matter to you or affect you and your community or industry. Take some time to understand their impact. Look for reliable and accurate sources of information such as government websites and academic journals as well as follow news sources, social media, and advocacy groups. Speak to people with experiences in similar policy making process such as representatives from your competitor organization or read up on the practices in other foreign countries.
2. Engage with your elected representatives
One of the most direct ways to influence policy is to contact your elected representatives. You can share your concerns through letters, emails or phone calls. If possible, meet them physically. Let them know your thoughts on particular policies and why they matter to you. Keep your message concise and to the point, and be sure to provide specific examples of how the policy impacts you and your community or industry.
3. Join a group of like-minded
Another way to get involved in the policy-making process is to join a group or organization that advocates for the policies that matter to you. This can be non-profits, community organizations or advocacy groups. By joining a group, you can receive the appropriate support from like-minded partners, amplify your voice and work with others to influence policy change. These are two examples on how your participation matters.
o The #MeToo social movement in 2017 empowered many women who had endured sexual abuse and harassment to ‘stand up’ and generated
reforms related to women’s rights and safety especially at workplace
around the world.
o The Black Lives Matter (#BlackLivesMatter) movement in 2020 sparked
nationwide protests and calls for policy reforms related to police
brutality and racial justice.
4. Vote!
This is perhaps the most powerful way to influence policy. When you vote in elections, you have the opportunity to choose leaders who will represent your values and work to enact policies that align with your beliefs and priorities. Be sure to research the candidates and their policy positions before casting your vote.
I hope the above helps empower you to start understanding policies and getting involved in the policy making process.
Policies may seem abstract, complex and daunting, but they play a crucial role in shaping our life, livelihood and society. Thus, it is important that we understand policies and have a say in how we want our world to operate.
So the next time you hear someone say that policy doesn’t matter, remember that it is not true! Policy matters and that it affects everything from your health and safety to your economic well-being. Most importantly, you have the power to make a difference. Get involved! Simplistically is here to help.
